What is wreck diving ?

Wreck diving is popular for scuba divers that want to explore the wreckage of sunken vessels, aircrafts, submarines or even tanks. Most of the sites are the result of accidents but it also common to sink a prepared wreck to create an artificial reef within recreational limits.

Based on diver experience and wreck condition a dive can include penetration (full or limited) or just swimming around the wreckage.

Non-penetration diving is suitable for all open water divers and presents almost no extra risks. The only condition is for the divesite to be within recreational depth limits.

What are the risks ?

There is a risk of entanglement and sharp edges around and near the wreck so one should take extra caution when near.

In case of penetration you are no longer in open water so in case of emergency you first need to find an exit point. Movement inside the wreck is limited and difficult.

Considering that structure might sit in a tilted position or can be badly damaged there is a risk of getting lost.

Inside the wreckage natural light is missing so divers have to bring torches. In case of failure of the light sources there is risk of partial or full darkness.

What skills are needed for wreck diving ?

  • good buoyancy control
  • night dive experience
  • deep dive experience
