Diving Cenotes and Riviera Maya – Mexico

mexico-diving

Riviera Maya from Yucatán Peninsula includes famous diving and snorkeling destinations like Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Isla de Cozumel and cenotes.

My dive:

I got the chance to explore many of the dives available in Riviera Maya. I would highlight the cenotes diving as this is the only place where this type of diving is available. Another top activity is the bull shark encounter from Playa Del Carmen. The reef around both Playa Del Carmen and Cozumel is rich in coral and sealife.

Getting there:

Cancun International Airport (CUN) is a popular airport with a lot of regular and charter flights being directly connected to the main cities from United States, Canada and Europe. From the airport to your destination a private taxi transfer can be easily arranged with your hotel.

When to visit:

The best time to visit Riviera Maya is during the dry season that lasts from end of November to February. The weather has daily highs around 28°C / 83°F and lows to 19°C / 66°F. The water temperature is around 28°C / 83°F with very good visibility (over 30 m / 100 feet).

What you`ll see:

Cenotes, Freshwater fish, Bull Shark, Reef Shark, Turtles, Electric ray, Octopus, Moray Eel, Sweetlips, Barracuda, Angelfish, Groupers, Lobster.

There is a dive for everybody in Yucatán Peninsula regardless of the level or interest.

Accommodation:

Area is well known for all-inclusive resorts and smaller boutique hotels. Depending on the type of vacation you want, resorts offer relaxation but the hotels are spread outside of the city. For those who prefer to explore mexican food, souvenir shops and nightlife booking a hotel in Playa Del Carmen is the best option.

We have stayed in The Carmen Hotel near the famous Calle Quinta Avenida. Any hotel within walking distance is good for enjoying Playa Del Carmen.

Diving Center

I would definitely recommend Phantom Divers from Playa Del Carmen as they have great experience and excellent history. Being the first dive center to offer the bull shark encounter they guarantee a safe and enjoyable dive.

Dive Rating:

Snorkeling:

No reef available for shore snorkeling and a boat is needed to reach a good snorkeling spot. One great opportunity represents the cenotes as they offer crystal clear water and one of a kind experience.
